The review aimed to describe the legal framework that defines ecotourism activities in the participating countries and in different European countries, as well as the certification bodies for tourist activities and services in each participating country, in order to compile the criteria and procedures that are used for labelling ecotourism service providers across Europe.
The Swedish Ecotourism Association has produced a list of activities that merit certification to guide the review of ecotourism activities liable for certification in the participating countries. The review was based on information drawn by primary and secondary sources. In each country, approximately 10 key-organisations or individuals involved in ecotourism development and certification were interviewed through telephone or face-to-face interviews, including specialised tour operators, public officials of National Tourism Authorities, NGOs involved in environment protection and tour operators specialising on sport and recreational activities.
Four National Reports on the review of criteria, procedures and legal framework of ecotourism certification have been produced in English for Greece, Hungary, Romania and Sweden; and a Handbook for Ecotourism Labelling, which comprises information from the National Reports and from Europe generally.
